What is Biomimetics ?

Biomimetics is the art and science of duplicating the functional anatomy of a biological organism in engineering materials.

Velcro is probably the most famous example, inspired by the burrs on seed pods that stick to the fur of animals – in this case a dog being walked by a Swiss engineer.

On a technical level, The Robot Studio is concerned with understanding the functional anatomy of animals and humans – the way and the why of how the joints and muscles are arranged and activated to produce a full range of powerful movements.

Understanding how all the components of the body are elastically interconnected to efficiently absorb and redirect mechanical energy is the first step in successfully copying nature’s fantastic designs and so produce better robots.
